Reading logs are intended to show an analysis or reflection of what each individual took from them each week. I want to discuss a few that had the biggest impact on altering my personal point of view and how beneficial it was to allow other opinions to have weight. This course provided insight on varying opinions individuals have within the fields of health and gender and the impact or conflicts that arise as a result. The week we discussed pregnancy and birth was very impactful. I found the Doula who spoke of her practice was a pivotal point in changing some of my perceived notions of this practice. I had always just believed in hospital deliveries, but her scope of practice showed insight on all the different options offered to women who are expecting. It enabled me to be open to understanding the preferences of individuals to choose home birth, or hospital depending on their circumstances. It coincided with one of the reading assignments that week where a strong argument was given on natural birth. Having the Doula speak about her profession, made me look at this article more analytically. I am focusing on this particular week of discussion because it relates to what the intention of this class is about. It’s about listening to other perspectives or points of view and to take the arguments into consideration. It may not change someones point of view, but it may allow them to accept others and accept the validity of their arguments. It showed me how to keep an open mind in regards to gender and health which are very complex topics. To be more thoughtful in forming opinions and take multiple factors into consideration. What is right for one, is not necessarily right for everyone.
